Hunecks grab top honors at NYSSRA Awards Banquet

Feb 28, 2009- The Saratoga Biathlon Club hosted the NYSSRA Series Awards at the NYSSRA Championships Banquet in Hadley, NY.  Shenendehowa’s Austin Huneck was honored for being the top overall points earner during the 08-09 season.  NYSSRA also honored Austin’s dad, Tim Huneck for being the top master.   Austin and Tim skied in 15 NYSSRA events, finishing 1-2 overall in scoring with 1062 points between them! In addition, Saratoga Biathlon’s Carly Wynn and Southern Adirondack’s Sherry Dixon were also honored for being the top junior and open/master women during the NYSSRA Season.

NYSEF Nordic was recognized as the 2009 club series champions, finishing ahead of Peru Nordic Masters/Team High Peaks and the Shenendehowa Nordic Club.

NYSSRA honored individual age-division winners with NYSSRA training gear.  Points series winners had to have skied in at least two races including the NYSSRA Champions Cup 20 Km Classic race.  Winners got to choose from training vests, pants and jackets made by VOmax.

Sprague and Vogl win New York State Nordic Championship!

Queensbury’s Kevin Sprague won the annual NYSSRA Nordic Champions Cup Race held at the Saratoga Biathlon Club.  Kevin skied the 20 km classic race in 1:06:30 capturing the gold and the prestigious Champions Cup ahead of two former champions.  Kevin adds the gold medal to the bronze he captured in the 2008 championships.  2007 champ, Paul Allison came in second, and Bob Underwood, the 2005 champion, came in third.

In the women’s race, Andrea Vogl won her first NYSSRA title.  2002 champion, Janet Findlay added another medal to her impressive resume of NYSSRA championships (1 gold and 3 silver).  In third was Sandy Schreyer.

The event was hosted by the Saratoga Biathlon Club who did an admirable job in preparing the course after the torrential rain and hard freeze from the day before.

In Friday’s club championship relays, Berkshire academy’s two teams took the top spots.  Peru Nordic’s Cowboys from Hell featuring Mike Wynn and Chris Rose, captured the bronze.
